Building Connections – Social Housing in a New Era

18 Jan 2010

With an upcoming general election, Norfolk social housing providers came together at an event to discuss what the challenges and changes might be in the coming few years. Saffron Housing Trust had invited other local providers such as Flagship, Freebridge and the Norfolk RSL Alliance to reach out to local politicians, from both a national and local level, to reinforce how much the social housing sector contributes to the local economy. 15% of the Norfolk population live in social housing and over £100 million has been spent on development up to March 2009 with social housing building more new homes than the private sector.

David Orr, Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation, spoke of various initiatives that the NHF are championing with rural housing being a major area of discussion within their Save our Villages campaign. David Orr says 'There is a fear that encouraging more building will result in concreting over England but if we don't want a countryside pickled in aspic like a Disneyland Theme Park we need to build more homes and affordable housing lies at the centre of the battle to save traditional village life. Unless we build more affordable homes for local people, they will continue to be priced out of rural areas and the services and facilities they support will vanish with them.' Richard Bacon MP also addressed the audience who included fellow MPs the Rt Hon Charles Clarke and Chloe Smith joined by councillors and representatives from many aspects of social housing in Norfolk. Richard Bacon encouraged social housing to continue to look forward citing examples of developments in his South Norfolk constituency such as the sustainable homes built by Saffron in Diss.

Adam Ronaldson Chief Executive of Saffron Housing Trust said ' We were delighted to see so many people at the event which allowed us to explain what an important part social housing has to play in the local economy. At Saffron we always aim to provide the best service possible to our tenants and we need to plan for future needs'.
