26 Jul 2010

From the first of July, John Whitelock joined the Executive Team as Director of New Business taking on a new role combining the housing development side of Saffron Housing Trust with bringing in new services and opportunities. Some of our customers will know John as he has been with Saffron, initially with the supported housing team, since it started six years ago. He is looking forward to his new role and believes that Saffron is well placed to help develop new services for tenants and the wider community. Saffron is also delighted to welcome new Board members, South Norfolk Councillors Eloise Ellis and John Overton.

Barley Court

Barley Court

Barley Court promotes independence for its residents, so the care offered is on a need basis and a minimum of four hours care is needed to meet the criteria to apply for a tenancy. Our 24-hour care is designed to assist with meals, bathing, dressing, laundry, medication and reassurance and continuity for those who become confused or are experiencing memory problems. Family support is welcomed and expected with doctors' appointments, hospital appointments, collecting pensions and shopping etc.
When a tenant moves in the Care Co-ordinator on duty will create a care plan reflecting personalized needs required by that person and updated regularly to assure the tenant receives the appropriate care as his or her condition changes.

Barley Court is a two-storey building consisting of 58 self-contained flats, two of which are designed for the disabled. Two lifts with braille buttons give easy access to both floors as well as seven stairways that are situated at various points around the building. Coloured handrails in four different colours help tenants remember which area their flat is situated in and flat numbers are signposted around the corridors.

Each flat is designed with safety in mind with a shower seat and hand rails fitted in the toilet/shower room. Special non-slip flooring is also standard in both kitchen and toilet and there is also an assisted bathroom with a hoist for use when a carer is present.

A communal laundry with washing machines and tumble dryers is situated in the conservatory downstairs if you are able to do your own washing. Household rubbish should be taken to the bin store provided in the grounds but if you are unable to do so your carer will collect it for you.

Barley Court has its own licensed bar in the lounge which is open daily for tenants and families which is a good social meeting point and a great asset for various parties and social events. A pool table, dartboard and library are also available for tenants' use.

Lunch is served daily in the dining room with the opportunity to buy sandwiches, plated salads, scones, sausage rolls and cakes to take home for tea – handy if you're expecting company! – at reasonable prices. During the summer there are monthly outings, and parties with entertainment are provided throughout the year as well as weekly bingo sessions, daily coffee mornings and various activities organised by the care co-ordinators at weekends.

Barley Court is close to all main facilities including a doctors and dentists surgery just outside the gates with a chemist who will deliver your prescriptions. The doctors' surgery has a wide range of clinics including diabetic and counselling and a NHS chiropodist is also in the area.

There are private chiropodists who visit if required and a hairdressing salon which is open every Thursday plus a barber once a month for the men. A post office, general store and a fish and chip shop are within a short walking distance and both milk and newspapers are delivered daily.

The city of Norwich is only a 20 minute bus ride away, and the door to door minibus service to Norwich picks up at the main entrance at 9.00am every Friday, returning in time for lunch.
